Did you know its just 25 years since plastic carrier bags were introduced into the shopping world?
Over 500bn plastic bags a year are now used globally and it can take years for bags to decompose.
Once a plastic bag starts to break down, toxic particles seep into the soil and water.
A lot of energy goes into making plastic bags and after one use they are often thrown into the bin -
then they take up to 1,000 years to degrade in our land fills.
deli-vert would like to support a different approach and help customers to think about how
they carry their shopping. The pile of plastic is a problem we all need to tackle. We hope to
make available very soon a reusable, affordable, functional shopping bag to encourage people
to re-use it and be proud to carry it.
Until then, we hope that most customers will bring in their own bags when they are shopping,
we don’t mind what they say, as long as they are being re-used! We have started trading using
paper bags with paper handles which are made using less energy, give off lower pollutant emissions,
decompose much more quickly and also increase public awareness of environmental issues.
Re-use them by putting nice presents in them and give them to your friends, fill them with
vegetable peelings and then pop them in your compost bin, make Christmas decorations with them.
Be imaginative! Slowly we can start to think about ways to reduce the number of plastic bags
that are dumped into our landfills.
We could go on… Walk or ride a bike to the shop rather than bring the car and bring your own bag….
You get the idea. Small changes in the way we shop can have a much bigger impact on our environment.
